During these difficult and uncertain times, the federal and provincial governments have been taking measures to provide financial support to those who need it. This includes employed and self-employed individuals who have been directly impacted by the COVID-19 outbreak. In addition to the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB), the province of British Columbia has announced the B.C. Emergency Benefit for Workers (BCEBW). Below you’ll find a brief overview of the BCEBW including its eligibility requirements, how you can apply, and what you’ll need to prepare in order to have a smooth application process. For more details, please refer to the following link.
What is it?
The B.C. Emergency Benefit for Workers will provide financial support to eligible B.C. residents. It will be in the form of a one-time $1,000 tax-free payment to those whose ability to work has been impacted by the COVID-19 outbreak. You can expect the payment within 10 days of your application’s approval.
Who Qualifies?
The BCEBW requires that applicants meet the following conditions:
- Resident of B.C. on March 20, 2020
- Qualify and be approved for the CERB
- 15 years old or older
- Filed or will file a 2019 B.C. income tax return
- Don’t receive provincial income assistance or disability assistance
Note that if you receive the BCEBW payment and are found to be ineligible, you will be required to repay it with penalties and interest.
How Can You Apply?
You can apply for the BCEBW online here or via telephone. However, remember that the application deadline is on December 2, 2020.
